2009-2010 This year, the change jar in the Narthex will once again have a new label. We will be raising funds for an amazing project called charity:water (check it out online: www.charitywater.org ) It all started with one young man, Scott Harrison, three years ago in New York. He learned that one billion people on earth do not have safe drinking water, and decided to help. For his 31st birthday, Scott asked for $20 donations instead of gifts. Over 700 people donated. He was able to take those funds to Africa where wells were dug and entire villages finally had safe water. Today, charity:water has grown to be a wonderful non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Charity:water gives 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need all around the world. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. Our Sunday School goal is to give water to MANY people, and we invite you to help us! Bring your change to church, and deposit it in the charity:water jar in the Narthex. We thank you in advance, as always, for your great kindness!! WOW!! As of April 15, we have collected a total of $3,760! Thanks and love from the Sunday School! The challenge now … can we reach $5,000 by June? When we hit $5,000, we will be able to completely pay for the construction of a fresh water well somewhere in the world — and we'll get to choose where!! Imagine providing fresh, safe water for an entire village!! As the Sunday School keeps giving, we offer the congregation another opportunity to buy charity:water gift certificates for Mother's Day. These attractive certificates, announcing your gift to charity:water, will be available in $10 denominations (a great gift for Mom, kids!), as well as $25, $50, and $100. Look for the forms in the Narthex, and help us go over the top for charity:water in 2010. Past Projects: Raised $10,000 to buy two "arks" of animals with Heifer International. Raised $20,000 to benefit the people of the Rosebud Lakota Sioux tribe (including a university scholarship, eyeglass fund, support for the Two Strike community, and a visit from a 17-member church mission team) 2004-2005:Building Faith --supporting Habitat for Humanity Norristown. Work teams helped renovate homes, the children made housewarming gifts, the Joy Circle ran a Father's Day tool drive... 2007-2008: Raised more than $6,100 to purchase playground equipment for the Ninh Thuan Orphanage in Vietnam, and to send a number of the children to school, too. 2008-2009: Raised over $3,600 for Covenant House Philadelphia. In addition we collected hundreds of hat, gloves and scarves, made prayer pillows, and went down to the House several times to make sandwiches for their street outreach to teens.
