2008-2009:

This year, the change jar in the Narthex will have a new label.  We will support Covenant House .  Covenant House is a wonderful organization (the local branch is in Philadelphia) that is a literal lifesaver for homeless teens.  Each night in our city, there is a number of teenagers who walk the city with no food and nowhere to rest their heads - young people from terrible home situations, those who have been forced to exit the foster care system, etc.  In many cases these troubled kids have more troubles still - no high school diplomas, no job training.  Without help their futures are bleak indeed.

Covenant House is open to these children 24 hours a day, providing emergency food, clothing, shelter, and medical care.  Beyond meeting their immediate needs, Covenant House offers a network of ongoing support - GED tutoring, job training, and much more.

This organization exists to rescue an often-forgotten group of young people, and to give them hope for a much brighter tomorrow.

In addition to collecting money, we will periodically be collecting items as well (you may recall last Lent we collected hundreds of pairs of socks for them)

Covenant House is asking for donations of gloves and hats (adult size, as the people they serve are older teenages) during the holiday season.  These kids come in off the street, sometimes with only the clothes on their backs.  A pair of gloves or a hat would be deeply appreciated by these teens.  Please consider donating a new pair of warm gloves or a winter hat. and help us help the good folks at Covenant House.

There will be a collection bin in the Narthex starting November 23 and as we get a little closer to Christmas we'll put items on a "mitten tree"
