September 6, 2011 is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Henry Muhlenberg. This event presents a unique opportunity to celebrate his heroic efforts to establish the Lutheran Church in this country, as well as the role he and his family played in the American Revolution.
In the early 18th Century, German immigrants arrived in the Philadelphia area seeking the freedom of life in America. But they soon realized that there were hardly any true Lutheran pastors to shepherd them in their new land. Those who were in place were either poorly trained or charlatans.
The Lutheran congregations in New Hanover, Providence and Philadelphia petitioned the church fathers in Halle back in Germany to send them a true pastor. In 1742 they received the answer to their prayers when Henry Melchior Muhlenberg arrived in Pennsylvania.
The story of Muhlenberg’s 44 years of service in America ending with his death in 1786 is truly inspiring. Providence brings this story to life in a powerful and informative one hour production. The title of the play reflects Pastor Muhlenberg’s close ties to Augustus Church in Providence Township and his absolute reliance on God’s providence to lead him through the trials and hardships he encountered in planting the Lutheran Church in America.
Providence brings the story of a most extraordinary man to the stage in a spirited, informative production.
This remarkable play demonstrates how the founding of the United States and
the development of the Lutheran Church in America are inextricably bound together. Audiences
will achieve a deeper understanding of their faith heritage while experience the American
Revolution through the eyes of the Muhlenberg Family.
