The Piano (My Parents’ Endowment)
Marda Craig
Since I’m a relatively new member of Christ’s Church let me introduce myself.
I grew up in Christ’s Lutheran when the church was located on Plymouth Avenue in Oreland. When my brother and I were about 10 and 12 our parents, Davis and Marion Phelps, accepted a calling as choir director and organist at a church in Narberth, PA. So our family left Christ’s Church to work and worship together at the new church and we stayed there for more than 10 years.
It is almost 15 years ago now that both our parents passed away and we had the task of deciding where some of our parents processions should go. When we came to Mother’s piano we knew it should be at Christ’s Lutheran, their home church. Now that our family has returned I have come to know how much the piano means to our new church family.
¬ It leads us and inspires us during most of our Sunday worship services.
¬ A number of the youth in the congregation have learned to play the instrument, and they have chosen music as a career, going on to teach the children of our church family and the community.
¬ We have enjoyed concerts and recitals that have helped to raise funds to support our youth on their Mission trips.
As you can see, the piano is a continuing legacy (endowment) of my parents’ mission in life, that of worshipping God through music and teaching young people. And it is an endowment that will serve Christ’s Church for years to come.
Not all of us have pianos, organs, or stain glass windows to give to the church, but we have gifts to give. Please prayerfully consider what kind of gift you may want to give. It can be a gift of money made weekly, monthly, yearly, or a planned endowment for the future. The gift will be your endowment (legacy) to Christ’s Church for years to come.
I want to say in closing that the Craig family feels truly blessed to be a part of the Christ’s Lutheran Church family…..it’s good to be home again! God Bless You!
